Moving Your Gelato Business Outside the Home

Lots of businesses start out as home businesses and grow into something great. Gelato and ice cream businesses are no exception. There are many American households who bake goods and make ice cream or sweet treats on the side. The fun comes in building that business to expand outside the house. You’ll need a business plan, some basic funding (can be bootstrapped), gelato supplies, and a space to rent.

Step One: Finding a Space

The minimum space requirement for most gelato stores is about 600 square feet, but can be as high as 1200 square feet. As you’re looking at a space to rent, you need to be conscious of expenses and potential for foot traffic. Rent will cost most people a minimum of about $40,000 per year. Bear that number in mind as you’re considering your potential expenses, like the costs to order ice cream spoons or pay employees. There is also interest to consider if you plan to take out a loan to cover these costs.

Step Two: Calculating Supply Costs

The most crucial step in moving from a home business to a store front is in managing your inventory, which is the single biggest factor in determining whether you sink or swim in the retail world. Order in bulk to cut costs, especially on non perishables like frozen yogurt cups. You shouldn’t order your ice cream stocks too far in advance, as it could spoil the final product either with frostbite or expiration dates.

Step Three: Employees

The single biggest cost you’re likely to incur running your own operation is the cost of hiring others to work with you. Your best option to lower these costs is to take a direct hand in managing day-to-day efforts at your shop. You’ll need three people at any given moment to run the store effectively, but two can do the job on non-busy days (such as weekdays). You’ll also need to hire part timers to cover the odd shift here and there. All of these expenses quickly add up, especially if you have employees in reserve.

Final Thoughts

Once you’ve calculated your costs, you should factor about $1,000 in sales per day. It’s a modest goal for a 70-80 hour work week, and you should be able to hit that on most days. Failing to hit that goal isn’t the end of the world, but it will reduce your revenues from the business.

Reasons to Install French Doors

Written by ETO Doors.

French doors are one of the most popular choices for interior doors. They are a great choice for anyone looking to add a touch of elegance and class to their home. They are also incredibly versatile, making them a perfect addition to almost any home regardless of the interior design or architecture. Here are a few of the reasons why French doors are one of the best interior door styles:

Getting Light Into a Room

One of the key features of interior French doors is the use of glass as a design element. French doors usually have several windows or glass elements, or even a large piece of glass with wood accents. This means that they let in a tremendous amount of light. If you are looking for an interior door that is facing a den or office space, this can be a perfect way to make your room feel brighter.

Opening Up Space

A French door is a great solution if you want to make a room feel bigger than it is. This is because of the use of glass throughout the door, which opens up the space and makes it feel larger and more inviting.

Wide Range of Designs

Shopping for French interior doors is fun for many people because of the many different design options that are available. This starts with the use of glass. Depending on how the glass windows are integrated, you can have a classic look or one that is completely modern. Using different types of glass can also change the look and feel of a French interior door. You’ll never have to settle for a door design that you don’t like when you are looking for French interior doors.

Plenty of Material Options

Interior French doors have traditionally been made from wood, which is still a popular choice for homeowners who want a classic look. However, there are now many different types of French door materials to choose from. You can select a French door that uses fiberglass, steel or aluminum depending on which one will fit best with the rest of your home.

Energy Efficiency

French doors are more than just stylish; they are also very energy efficient. They are very airtight and do a good job of reducing leaks that can cause you to use more heating or air conditioning than you need. You can extend the energy efficiency of your French doors by using high-efficiency glass.

Finding the Right Type of Couch Cushion for Your Home

Couch cushions may not sound like it would be too hard to shop for but if you want the best fit for your comfort, you’re going to have to consider your options.

sofa (1)

If you’re looking for couch foam that’s firm when you sit, take a look at all-foam cushions. Meant for more support, this is a popular option that’s primarily made with a high-density foam core so you don’t sink in. The ridges that are on top of the foam provide comfort as well as stability. The good thing about this also is that you don’t need to fluff it after you get off of it unlike feather-filled cushions.

Spring down couch cushions utilize core springs surrounded by a foam box. Another comfortable option, it provides support but a little more softness in the base as the springs give way to your body weight. These cushions do need to be fluffed to maintain its shapely appearance.

A blendown is a much thinner type of foam with layers of poly-fiber blend and polyester wrapped around its base. A luxurious cushion it looks and acts like a pillow. A little less firm than many people like, but are still great to use as replacement cushions. They do require fluffing after each sitting because of their pronounced look.  Many people use these types of cushions on decorative sofas because of their aesthetic beauty.

One good tip to remember is you get what you pay for. When it comes buying a sofa, the cheaper the quality is, the fewer options you will have at replacing the cushions. You don’t always have to settle with the most expensive sofa. However, they do offer more luxury options as well as comfort levels that other sofas cannot match.

Take some time to visit a store that has model sofas on display and feel how plump or soft they are when you sit down. Keep in mind that they break in after a while so they may feel a bit stiff at first. By trying out different cushions, you’ll get an idea on which one suits you the best. You don’t want to get stuck with a couch cushion that provides little to no comfort. Hopefully these tips will give you an idea on what type of cushion you want in your household. Remember to look for quality if you want your foam to last through the tests of life.

Details To Consider When Selecting Replacement Front Doors

Upgrading or replacing your front entry door is the perfect way to improve the curb appeal and overall value of your home. New entry doors can transform any space from the inside or the outside by adding new element of visual excitement. Choosing the right front door is critical to getting a great look for your house. In many cases, the difference in getting the best front doors for homes is in the details.

When you are shopping for new front entry doors, it’s important to consider the major factors such which materials are used, which types of wood are part of the door and whether you need a door slab or a pre-hung system. But the small considerations will also play a major role in how your door looks and how much you’ll love it.

Here are just a few of the smaller — but still important — details that you’ll want to consider when researching new entry doors:

Type of Doors: There are many different door configurations that you can choose from when selecting a new front door. For example, you’ll want to consider whether single doors or double doors are right for your entry door. If you choose single doors, you’ll likely want to add sidelights to complement the look.

Glass Choices: One of the first decisions that you will need to make before purchasing your front door is whether you want it to have a window or not. Since most people prefer having windows to add attractiveness and natural light to their home, the next question is how the glass will be integrated into the door. You can choose one large glass window or several smaller, “cut out” panes of glass to create decorative appeal.

You’ll also need to decide what type of glass you want to have in your windows. Depending on the look that you want, you can choose from stained glass, frosted glass or textured glass with blinds. Glass choices can be about more than just looks. Selecting impact-resistant glass can be important in areas with the potential for strong storms, while using Low-E glass can provide UV protection inside your home while improving energy efficiency.

Door Swing and Handedness: Most front doors are built with the handle on the right side as the door is being pushed away to accommodate right-handed people. However, if you are left-handed it might be more comfortable to have the handle on the opposite side. In addition, while most front doors swing toward the inside of the home, you can also choose to your your door swing outside.

When did it First Become Popular to Use a Dessert Spoon

Dessert is arguably the most important part of any good meal, and it’s primarily eaten with lunch or dinner. It has become a symbol for the ending to a meal, providing satisfaction to the palate by leaving a sweet and pleasant taste in the mouth. It has also been known to provide a sense of euphoria.

Although dessert can be eaten with a fork, it is best enjoyed with a special kind of spoon designed specifically for desserts. Dessert spoons were first used in the United States around 1824, having enjoyed some measure of popularity prior to that in England. A dessert spoon is larger than a teaspoon but smaller than a tablespoon. They were originally designed to measure liquid but have since been used at the dining table for serving dessert to diners.

Frozen yogurt spoons come in a variety of styles, materials and prices. They can be made of silver, stainless steel or even plastic. It is similar in size to a soup spoon, but they have a more oval shape than round in comparison.

A dessert spoon is equal in measure to two teaspoons and measuring was the original purpose. In some areas of the world, dessert spoons are very common while in other parts they are almost never used. Instead, diners use either a fork or a tablespoon to eat their dessert.

Tasting spoons and dessert spoons are not the same. Tasting spoons are usually much smaller in size, and are typically made from plastic or metal. Sometimes, there are even very elegant gold-plated ones that are used for small and very fancy desserts. The idea is to give the person eating the dessert a small sample, like you would when tasting wine. This lets a person explore different types of desserts or flavors of the same dessert at the same time. Often, ice cream parlors will have these miniature spoons so that you can sample many of the different kinds of ice cream they have to offer before you decide which kind you want to order. They are usually very small and made of plastic.

Spoons may feel like a small part of the dining experience, but they allow you to experience a dessert in ways that a fork cannot. Rich desserts that combine ice cream and cake, for example, are much better when you can taste each layer of flavor. Today, we take these spoons for granted but they have become an important part of our dining experience without us even noticing.
Gelato Products sells gelato cups and spoons online, with fast delivery to anywhere in the continental United States.

Tips to Avoid Freezing Pipes

Winter time in 2014 has been a harsh one so far. Across the country, temperatures are sub zero, and pipes are prone to bursting under these conditions. Pipes burst when the water inside freezes and expands the pipe. Even the best tankless water heater needs some special care when the temperatures drop, so be sure that you read on for tips to avoid freezing your pipes this winter.

Insulate pipes that are running along the walls in your laundry room. Check your laundry tubs, behind the machine and beneath the stairs in your basement. These pipes are typically touching a wall that is not insulated, and are prone to freezing unless you put some insulation around them.

Run Water
Turn on your water faucets to get water flowing through your pipes. Moving water won’t freeze as rapidly, so be sure to open faucets about one-quarter of the way to relieve pressure from ice in the pipes.

Water Main
If you happen to have a prolonged power outage, be sure to use the shut off valve to turn the water off in your home. Once the main is off, run your faucets until there is no more water coming out. Once you’ve drained the water in your pipes, you’re good to wait for power to be restored. In the event that a pipe does burst, you should go and shut off the valve to stop the water from causing additional damage.

Water Heater
You should drain your water heater to avoid damaging it during extreme cold temperatures. Look for two valves above your water heater, one for cold and one for hot water. At the base of the heater, you will find the spout where the water drains. Drain the water and it should drift toward a drain in the ground of your basement. If you need to drain water heaters in Los Angeles, use a bucket as most heaters are not stored in basements and do not have easy access to a drain.

Cottages and mobile homes may also want to drain the water from the home when heaters are not in use. If there is a power outage, your water heater won’t be able to heat the standing water it is holding and may freeze over.

If your pipes are already frozen, seek help from a professional. Call a plumber if you find that your home has power but you suspect there is water damage. Definitely do not try to heat pipes on your own, as this can cause unintended consequences.

The Many Uses of Residential Foam

November 14, 2013 by

Foam is a versatile material. When it comes to commercial applications, foam can be used for thermal insulation, shock absorption, and in packaging. However, what many homeowners don’t realize is that foam can also be used in the home.

Residential foam can be used to create everything from a queen size memory foam mattress to couch cushions and even foam crown moldings. Foam is not only versatile, but also affordable and easy to customize. It has become the favorite material for DIY projects because it can be cut to fit any size and thickness. Are you ready to explore all the uses of residential foam? The following is brief look at the many uses of residential foam.

Mattresses: Everyone wants to sleep on a good mattress, but a quality mattress can cost thousands of dollars. Instead, consider buying a foam mattress for only a few hundred dollars. Basic foam mattresses are ideal for people who want a standard mattress that is comfortable and offers good support. Most foam mattresses are firm and offer pressure relieving benefits.

In addition to basic foam mattresses, consumers can also purchase memory foam mattresses that contour to the shape of their bodies. Memory foam in Canada distributes body weight evenly, prevents pressure points, and provides better circulation than conventional spring mattresses.

Finally, if you don’t want to buy an entire foam mattress, you can also purchase foam toppers designed to go on top of your existing mattress for ultimate comfort and support. For example, an eggcrate foam topper is designed to provide better air circulation, comfort, and support for the body.

Seats and cushions: Foam is the perfect material to replace your old seats and cushions. Instead of purchasing new seats and cushions, consider revamping your old ones with new foam. Foams that can be used for seats and cushions can be cut to any size and shape. You can even purchase special outdoor foam designed for outdoor patio furniture, boats, and watercraft.

Pillows and body support: A mattress is not the only way you can get comfortable with foam. Residential foam can be used to create a variety of comfort and support pillows, such as upper body pillows, leg pads, foam round bolsters, foam sacks, and whole body pillows. Since it is so versatile, you can create just the size and shape you need for the body part that needs the most support. For example, if you’re taller than most people, you can create a giant-size body pillow that fits your body perfectly.

The Environmental Benefits of Tankless Water Heaters

October 24, 2013 by

Hot water is important to our daily lives. We use it to bathe, wash clothes, and wash dishes. However, using hot water in our homes can be expensive; it can also take a toll on the environment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, about 18 percent of the average household utility bill (and carbon footprint) comes from heating water.

For these reasons, many homeowners are investing in energy-efficient water heaters that are not only good for the environment but also help to lower water heating costs. While there are many options on the market, a tankless water heater is a good choice if you’re searching for a model that is eco-friendly and kind to your pocket book. The following is brief look at tankless water heaters and why these models are superior to conventional storage heaters.

Also called demand-type water heaters, tankless water heaters are designed to heat water directly without the need for a traditional storage tank. Due to its small size, it can be mounted on the wall either inside or outside of the home. Research has shown that tankless water heaters can be up to 30 percent more energy efficient than conventional water heaters. This is because traditional water heaters have to constantly heat up the water, while tankless water heaters simply heat water only as needed.

In addition to conserving water, a tankless water heater can save you a lot of money. An average household can save $100 or more per year with a tankless water year that is qualified by Energy Star, according to Energy Star. Tankless water heaters also last longer than conventional water heaters. Most units can last more than 20 years, while conventional storage units only last about 10 to 15 years. In addition to a longer shelf life, tankless water heaters have replaceable parts that are easy to install, extending their life even longer.

Do you need a new water heater? If you’re in the market for a new water heater, consider buying an efficient, water-saving tankless water heater to reduce hot water use and save money. You might need a new water heater if your current model is more than seven years old, or broken beyond repair.
Once you’ve purchased a new water heater, remember to have it properly installed by a professional water heater installer. You can also research additional tips on how to save more money and reduce the environmental footprint made by heating water.

Maximize Your Home Heating System

October 21, 2013 by

Winter is nearly here, which means it’s time to stay warm and toasty inside. Your home is supposed to be your protection from the outdoor elements, especially the during fall and winter months. This is possible through a home heating system or furnace. If you own one, then you know how wonderful it can be. But you also know it can be expensive to run.

So how do you enjoy a heated home without raising monthly energy costs? During a weak economy homeowners are always searching for ways to maximize their home heating units without increasing their energy bills. Here are a few ways you can improve the efficiency of your home heating system without adding more dollars to your energy bill.

Replace your heater filter on time. Your home is designed to keep the heat out; it is built with great installation and efficient seals including the windows and the doors. However, because of this the home can also trap contaminants such as dust, bacteria, and dirt, all of which get circulated back into the air you breathe. An older filter simply won’t do the job. Without a new Honeywell furnace filter, for example, your heater will simply circulate the unhealthy contaminates.

Replace your heater filter at least once a month to ensure that it works properly and capture contaminates. You can tell if your filter needs to be replaced if it is dark and dirty, or if it’s past the time designated by the manufacturer. When replacing the filter, make sure that you purchase the right size, such as 3m furnace filter.

Take advantage of the automatic precision control. Many of today’s modern heaters come with automatic, precision control. If you need a new heater, then purchase with this feature. If your current model has this feature, use it. It is designed to provide your home with the perfect amount of heat and airflow, even if it is freezing outside. Read the manual and learn how to use the custom settings to maximize your heating system year-round.

Keep the temperature down. While it seems obvious, many homeowners waste money on energy bills because the temperature is too hot. The best times to keep the temperature down are during the night and when you’re gone. What’s the perfect, most comfortable temperature? For most people, the best temperature is an average temperature between 68-72 degrees. Keeping it between 68 and 72 will keep you comfortable and help lower your heating bill.

Installing A Heated Floor: Some Considerations

October 18, 2013 by
Filed under Goods and Services, Home Tips and Ideas

There’s nothing like a heated floor on cold mornings. If the first thing you do when you crawl out of bed is hop in the shower, stepping on the warm tiles can make the first moments in the morning a treasure. Entry way tiles, kitchen floors, and the like are improved by this miracle of modern engineering. They are easy to install, extremely affordable for all incomes, and do wonders to improve the feel of your home. What follows are a few things to consider when deciding whether electric heated floors are right for you.

Heated floors are safe for the whole family. Granted, they are powered by electricity, which can cause concern for some folks, especially since heated floors are typically located in places where floors get wet. However, once installed, electric floors are almost impossible to damage. In addition, the thermostats are designed to turn off if any issues, such as a short. Companies like Easy Heat consider safety to be a priority so there should be no worries or concerns.

Since we have touched upon the subject of electricity, let’s talk about the savings to your power bills. Heated tiles can actually reduce your climate control costs, with an average savings of 25 percent. Powering a floor uses very little electricity, enough to power an electric blanket or large television. With the amount of financial concerns that most Americans live with in recent years, this could be seen as a blessing. And with the savings to your monthly bills, having an ingenious device such as this pretty much pays for itself in the long run.

It is relatively easy to install. Anyone with any construction experience, especially dealing with laying tile, should have no issues putting a heated floor in place. At it’s most basic, the electric cable laced mat is embedded into the mortar with the tile as the top layer. That’s really all it is. And though a heated floor can’t be retrofitted onto existing tile, the process of installing new tiles is a pretty basic job. If you’re considering a bathroom or kitchen remodel, that would probably be the perfect opportunity.

The most important thing to consider however is the comfort that is provided for you and your family by having a heated floor in your home. It provides warmth, safety, savings, and is relatively simple to install. In many ways, it just makes so much more sense to have one rather than the opposite. Heated floors are an amazing example of modern engineering, designed with the comforts of home in mind. And in no time, it could be in yours as well.
